Silk Scarfs

Ribbons, headbands and night wraps in silk

Skinny scarves to tie around a ponytail, bandanas to fold into a headband, squares to wrap your hair before bed.

Tying silk in your hair

How to wear a silk hair scarf

A silk hair scarf is one of three shapes here: a skinny scarf, a bandana or a square of up to 35.5 in (90 cm). Each one goes into the hair in its own way, so the notes below take them one at a time.

Skinny scarves as a hair ribbon

At 2 in (5 cm) wide and 33.5 to 35.5 in (85 to 90 cm) long, the skinny scarf ties around a ponytail. Wrap it twice over the elastic, finish with a bow and let the tails fall with the hair. Folded once more along its length, it also makes a narrow headband, knotted at the nape. Every print is in our skinny silk scarves.

Bandanas folded into a headband

For a wider band, the 21 in (53 cm) bandana is the silk scarf for hair to reach for. Fold it into a triangle, then fold from the long edge toward the point until the strip is about 2 in (5 cm) wide. Knot it at the nape under the hair, or set it across the nape and knot it on top. More ways to tie silk in your hair. All of them are in the silk bandanas.

A silk hair wrap for the night

For the night, take a square of 27.5 in (70 cm) or 35.5 in (90 cm) and fold it into a triangle. Bend forward, set the long edge at the nape with the point hanging over your face, then bring both ends up over the top and knot them at the front, a little to one side. Fold the point back over the knot and tuck it in. Tied this way, the wrap has no knot at the back to lie on. Sleeping in a silk scarf, step by step.

Braids, plaits and the whole head

A silk scarf for box braids needs length more than anything. Gather the braids up on the crown, lay a folded square over them and take the ends right around the bundle before knotting at the front. For a single plait, tie a skinny scarf at the top, braid it in as one of the three strands and knot it again at the end. To cover the head rather than dress the hair, look at the larger squares. Questions about wearing a silk hair scarf

Can I tie a silk scarf in short hair?

Yes. A bandana folded into a band works as a headband on a bob or a pixie cut, knotted at the nape or on top of the head. A skinny scarf goes around the head the same way, finished with a small bow just above one ear.

What size square do I need to wrap box braids?

For long or thick braids gathered at the crown, a 35.5 in (90 cm) square goes around the whole bundle with room for the knot. Shorter braids, or braids pinned into a low bun, fit in a 27.5 in (70 cm) square. Fold either one into a triangle first.

How do I tie a silk scarf around a bun?

Wrap a skinny scarf twice around the base of the bun and finish with a bow or a single knot, the tails left loose or tucked under. For a wider wrap, fold a bandana into a band about 2 in (5 cm) wide and wind it around the bun the same way.

How do I wear a silk scarf with curly hair?

By day, fold a bandana into a wide band, set it just behind the hairline and knot it at the nape under the curls, which stay free above and below. At night, gather the curls loosely on top of the head and tie a folded square around them, with the knot at the front.

How do I wear a bandana headband with bangs?

Set the band about 1 in (2.5 cm) behind the hairline, so the bangs stay free in front, and knot it at the nape under the rest of the hair. Fold the band a little narrower than usual so it sits flat on the head.
