Silk Scarfs

Bright orange, burnt orange, coral and peach

Orange here goes from the sun over a painted harbor to autumn birches by a river. See how each shape is worn, from the hair to the shoulders.

How each shape is worn

Orange silk scarves, bright and burnt

An orange silk scarf is the warmest note you can add to an outfit, and here it comes in several temperatures: bright orange, burnt orange, coral, peach and the tawny of a leopard's coat.

Bright orange as the main color

Where orange leads, it leads clearly. A shawl of patchwork hearts and daisies mixes orange with red and yellow; another carries buckles, chains and horse-head tassels in orange on cream. On the skinny scarves, orange surrounds giraffes and chrysanthemums with red and navy, and chains, ropes and a crest with yellow and cream. A square of autumn birches by a river adds yellow and sky blue, and on the bandana that reproduces Monet's Impression, Sunrise, a small orange sun hangs over a teal harbor. The two shawls are among our large silk scarves and shawls, the giraffes and chains among the skinny silk scarves.

Burnt orange, coral and peach

Away from bright orange, the shades turn softer or deeper. Burnt orange colors anemones, lilies and bees on a bandana with white and gray; coral blossom sprays share a cream bandana with sage; peach sets moon faces, horses and rabbits on a skinny scarf. If you are looking for a rust silk scarf, the darkest tones here are burnt orange, tawny and brick red; a taupe square of drifting leaves with rust and black sits with our red scarves.

Orange with denim, navy and olive

Orange is at ease with blue, so denim and navy are the obvious partners. With a camel coat or an olive jacket, it turns autumnal; with white linen or a striped shirt, it reads as summer. Over a gray coat, the leopard shawl in orange, gray and leaf green brings warmth without clashing. The leopard shawl is also on the animal print silk scarves page, and its blue partners on the blue silk scarves page.

Which sizes come in orange

Orange comes in nearly every size. Skinny scarves of 2 × 33.5 to 35.5 in (5 × 85 to 90 cm) tie in the hair or on a bag; bandanas of 21 in (53 cm) knot at the nape or the neck; the 25.5 in (65 cm) squares knot at the neck, and the 35.5 in (90 cm) lantern square wraps the whole head. The horse print with checks and stripes comes in three sizes, up to 35.5 in (90 cm). The shawls measure 51 in (130 cm). Check the size guide.

Questions about orange silk scarves

Does an orange scarf go with red lipstick?

Yes, when the scarf already has some red in it. The patchwork hearts and daisies shawl, in orange, red and yellow, and the skinny scarf of giraffes and chrysanthemums with red and navy both bridge the two. With the coral and peach scarves, a softer pink-red lip is the easier match.

Why do so many orange prints include blue?

Orange and blue are opposites on the color wheel, so each makes the other look brighter. You can see it in giraffes with navy, canal facades with sky blue, a sketched stallion with navy blocks, and horses, checks and stripes in orange, cream and light blue.

Which orange shawl is the calmest?

The buckle and chain shawl, orange on cream, and the leopard shawl with gray and leaf green; both sit well over beige, gray or black. The patchwork hearts and daisies with red and yellow, and the tawny leopards with plum, are for days when you want the color to lead.

Will an orange scarf work with brown leather?

Yes; orange and brown leather are natural partners, which is why the pairing looks autumnal. The leopard shawl with tawny and plum echoes a brown jacket, and the orange chain skinny scarf, with yellow and cream, looks good knotted on a brown bag handle. Keep the metals warm, brass or gold. More warm neutrals are on the brown silk scarves page.

Is a burnt orange silk scarf easier to wear than bright orange?

For many people, yes. Burnt orange is closer to brown and rust, so it sits easily with camel, olive, denim and gray. The bandana of anemones, lilies and bees mixes it with white and gray, which softens it further. Bright orange is easier when it is the only strong color in the outfit.
