Silk Scarfs

Squares big enough for the shoulders

Large squares of 43.5 in (110 cm) and shawls of 51 in (130 cm), worn open over the shoulders, drawn over the hair or tied as a sarong.

How to wear a large square

Large silk scarves and shawls, cut square

A large silk scarf here means a square of 43.5 in (110 cm) or a shawl of 51 in (130 cm). Both are squares, so they fold into a triangle that sits across the shoulders, rather than hanging straight down like a stole.

Large square or shawl

The large square silk scarf, 43.5 × 43.5 in (110 × 110 cm), still ties at the neck but is big enough to cover the shoulders. It comes in a horse print with plumes and striped panels, and in painted landscapes: a riverside village, and misty hills with garden flowers.

The shawl, 51 × 51 in (130 × 130 cm), is our oversized silk scarf, made for draping more than knotting. It folds into a deep triangle that reaches well down the back.

Four ways to wear a shawl

Fold the silk shawl corner to corner, lay it over the shoulders with the point down your back and leave the ends loose or knot them in front. Slide the fold up over your hair and the same triangle becomes a hooded wrap. Wrapped around the hips with the point at one side, it ties as a sarong. Rolled into a long band, it loops around the neck with ends to spare. More ways to wear a scarf.

A square, not a stole

A silk stole is a long rectangle, much longer than it is wide. Our shawls are squares, so they behave differently: folded into a triangle they give more depth at the back and a shorter drop in front. If you want a silk wrap you can knot at the chest and pull over your hair, the square is the simpler shape to handle. Smaller squares, from 20.5 to 35.5 in (52 to 90 cm), are in our silk square scarves; to cover the hair alone, see the silk head scarves.

Prints that need the space

Worn open, a shawl shows its whole drawing, so the prints here are full compositions: overlapping leopards inside a contrast border, tulip bouquets framed in navy or cream, jellyfish with coral and fish, patchwork hearts and daisies, buckles and chains with horse-head tassels. Most of the shawl prints come in several colorways. Animal print silk scarves.

Questions about wearing a large silk scarf

Is a 51 in (130 cm) shawl long enough to wear like a stole?

Not in the same way. A stole is a long rectangle; our shawls are squares of 51 × 51 in (130 × 130 cm). Folded into a triangle, the long edge measures about 72 in (184 cm), enough to cross in front or knot loosely, with the point down your back.

How do I tie a shawl as a sarong?

Fold the shawl into a triangle, wrap the long edge around your hips with the point at one side, and tie the two ends in a double knot just above the point. At 51 in (130 cm), it goes around most hips with ends left over.

How do I wear a shawl as a hooded wrap?

Fold it into a triangle and lay the fold over your hair, a little back from the forehead. Let the sides fall over the shoulders, then cross the ends under the chin and take them behind the neck, or simply let them hang. Other head wraps.

Is there a large silk shawl in blue?

Several. The buckles and chains print comes in royal blue with cream, the jellyfish sit on cream inside a cobalt border, the overlapping leopards come in cobalt, sky blue and navy, and the tulip bouquets are on navy. The large square with misty hills is pale blue. All blue silk scarves.

Can I tie a 43.5 in (110 cm) silk scarf at the neck?

Yes. Folded on the diagonal into a band and wound once or twice around, the large square makes a full, soft neck knot, bigger than a small square gives. The shawl can do the same, with a bulkier knot. Knots to try.
