A Flash of Orange on a Blue Leopard Print Silk Shawl

The same overlapping leopards come here in cool tones. Their coats are cobalt, sky blue and a silvery gray-white, each covered in dark navy rosettes, so the whole shawl reads blue from a distance. A tawny orange leopard stretches along the lower half and pulls the eye. Small black gaps show between the animals, the edge is finished in navy, and a corner turned back reveals a pale gray reverse.

Silk is a protein fiber. Treat it the way you treat hair.

  1. Hand wash, coldTwo minutes in cold water with a detergent made for silk or wool.
  2. Never a biological detergentIts enzymes break down protein, and silk is protein. No bleach either.
  3. Press, then dry flatRoll it in a towel to take the water out. Never wring it.
  4. Out of the sunDirect light fades dye. Dry it flat in the shade, not on a radiator.
  5. Iron damp, on the reverseLowest setting, no steam, and keep the iron off the hem.
  6. Store it loosely rolledRolled loosely in a drawer, away from light. A tight fold leaves a crease.

Dry cleaning works too: ask for silk, no solvent on the hem.
