Show moreWhy a silk bandana instead of cotton
A silk bandana is the same small square as the familiar cotton one, 20.5–21 in (52–53 cm) a side, cut in silk instead. It is lighter and thinner than cotton, so it folds into a slimmer band and ties a smaller knot.
Silk, not cotton
Most bandanas are printed cotton. Ours are silk, and you notice it in the hand: the square is lighter, it drapes instead of standing stiff, and the print sits on a cloth with a soft sheen. The Silk passport on each page names the fiber.
That lightness is why a silk bandana scarf works at the neck as well as on the head, with no bulk under a collar. Need more cloth than a bandana gives? Our silk square scarves go up to 35.5 in (90 cm).
Four ways to tie it
Fold it into a band about 2 in (5 cm) wide and tie it as a headband, knotted at the nape. Fold it into a triangle and tie it over the hair as a kerchief, again at the nape. Turn the triangle around and knot it at the neck with the point in front, as a silk neckerchief. Or tie it by one corner to a bag handle. Bandanas in the hair. For more knots at the collar, browse the silk neck scarves.

Paisley, florals and plain colors
The paisley silk bandana comes in burgundy with navy and in navy with ivory, the closest to the familiar bandana look. Paisley worn western style.
Beyond paisley there are painted lilies and irises, hydrangeas, a vase of flowers, baroque scrolls on black edged in gold or dark teal, doodled cats with a red heart, Monet's Impression, Sunrise in teal and orange, and plain silk in several colors. Many prints sit inside a contrast edge: mustard around cats in sweaters, cream around coral blossom sprays, navy around retro flowers.
Questions about silk bandanas
Is a silk bandana the same size as a cotton bandana?
Close to it. Cotton bandanas usually measure about 22 in (56 cm) a side; ours are 20.5–21 in (52–53 cm). Once folded the difference hardly shows, and the thinner silk gives a neater knot at the neck or the nape.
How wide should I fold a bandana for a headband?
Fold it corner to corner, then keep folding from the long edge until the band is 1.5 to 2.5 in (4 to 6 cm) wide. Narrower sits like a ribbon; wider covers more of the head. Tie it at the nape, under or over your hair. More headband ideas are among our silk hair scarves.
Can I wear a bandana under a shirt collar?
Yes. Fold it into a narrow triangle, slip it around the neck with the point in front or to one side, and knot the ends at the back or tuck them in. Silk lies flatter than cotton, so it fits under an open shirt or a jacket collar.
Is there a black silk bandana?
Yes: a plain black one, baroque scroll prints on a black ground trimmed with gold or with dark teal, and a black and white star print with a sunburst border. All black silk scarves.
Do silk bandanas come in solid colors?
Yes. The plain ones come in periwinkle, cream, black, lilac and cherry red, the same 21 × 21 in (53 × 53 cm) square as the printed ones. A solid one is the easiest to pair with a printed top. Red silk scarves.
