How to wear a western silk scarf
A western silk scarf is a bandana worn at the neck the ranch way: folded into a triangle, point in front, ends knotted behind. Ours are silk squares of 21 × 21 in (53 × 53 cm) in paisley and in stars.
The cowgirl knot, step by step
Fold the bandana corner to corner and place the point on your chest, with the long edge against your throat. Take the two ends around to the back of the neck and tie them in a flat knot, or knot them a little to one side if you wear your hair down. Pull the point straight so it sits centered over a shirt collar or a T-shirt neckline.
A search for a silk cowboy scarf usually leads to exactly this: the bandana tie, in silk instead of cotton. For other knots at the collar, see our silk neck scarves.
Paisley with a border
The paisley comes in burgundy with a navy striped border, and in navy with an ivory border drawn like lace. For a less traditional cowgirl scarf, there are stars in black and white inside a sunburst border. When the square is folded, the border runs down both sides of the triangle to the point, which frames the print at the front.

Bandana size, not a wild rag
A silk wild rag, in ranch wear, is a larger square, usually 34 in (86 cm) or more, wrapped twice and knotted in front. Ours are bandana size: one wrap, with the knot behind. If you want the wild rag wrap, look at our 35.5 in (90 cm) squares instead. Larger silk squares.
Beyond the neck
The same squares work off the neck too. Folded into a band, they tie as a headband with the knot at the nape; as a triangle, they become a kerchief over the hair. Under a hat, a narrow band at the hairline is enough. Tied by one corner, they also dress a bag handle.
Questions about the western silk scarf
Does the knot of a western scarf go in front or at the back?
At the back, for a bandana this size. With the point in front, the ends of a 21 in (53 cm) square reach around to the nape for a flat knot. Knotting in front takes a longer square that wraps the neck twice. More ways to knot it.
Why wear a western scarf in silk rather than cotton?
Silk is lighter and thinner, so the triangle lies flat under the knot and the collar instead of bunching. The print also sits on a soft sheen, which gives paisley a different look from the matte finish of cotton.
What colors do the western silk scarves come in?
Burgundy paisley with a navy striped border, navy paisley with an ivory lace-like border, and black and white stars with a sunburst border. Each pairs a strong ground with a contrasting edge, which sits well with denim and plain shirts. Navy and blue scarves.
What do I wear a western silk scarf with?
Denim, a plain white or chambray shirt, a suede jacket or a simple knit. Worn point in front over a buttoned collar or an open neckline, the paisley adds pattern without fighting the rest of the outfit. Ideas for wearing a scarf.
Is a star print bandana still a western scarf?
It wears the same way: folded into a triangle, point in front, knot behind. Black and white stars inside a sunburst border read as western without being paisley, and they suit black, gray or denim. Black silk scarves.
