How to choose a silk scarf: shape, use, color
A silk scarf is easiest to choose in three steps: the shape, then where you will wear it, then the colors. Every one of our silk scarves for women is on this page, and the notes below help you narrow it to the women's silk scarf you have in mind.
A ribbon or a square
Every scarf here is one of two shapes. The skinny scarf is a long, narrow strip, 2 × 33.5 to 35.5 in (5 × 85 to 90 cm), made to be tied rather than folded. Everything else is a square, from the bandana up to the shawl.
A ribbon is the quicker choice for a ponytail, a wrist or a bag handle. A square gives you more cloth to work with, so it can become a headband, a kerchief, a neck knot or a wrap, depending on its size. Skinny silk scarves.
Five sizes of square
The squares climb in five steps: the bandana at 20.5–21 in (52–53 cm), the small squares at 25.5–27.5 in (65–70 cm), the 35.5 in (90 cm) square, the large square at 43.5 in (110 cm) and the shawl at 51 in (130 cm). Each step adds enough cloth for one more way of wearing it. The squares, sorted by size.

Choose by where you will wear it
In the hair, a skinny scarf ties around a ponytail and a bandana folds into a headband. On the head, a bandana tied as a kerchief at the nape covers the top, while a square of 35.5 in (90 cm) or more wraps it completely. At the neck, a small square or a skinny scarf makes a neat knot. Over the shoulders, you need a large square or a shawl. Ways to wear each size. For a whole page on each use, see the silk head scarves and the silk neck scarves.
Then narrow it down by color
Each color page gathers the scarves whose palette includes that color, from black and white through blue, green and pink to orange and purple. Prints range from florals and painted landscapes to horses, leopards, giraffes, jellyfish, paper lanterns and chains. If color matters more to you than shape, start there instead. Blue silk scarves.
Questions about choosing a silk scarf
What is the narrowest silk scarf here, and the largest?
The narrowest is the skinny scarf, a strip just 2 in (5 cm) across. The smallest square is the bandana, 20.5–21 in (52–53 cm). The largest is the shawl, a square 51 in (130 cm) on each side, big enough to wrap the shoulders. Compare them in the size guide.
Which silk scarf goes in the hair, at the neck and on a bag?
The bandana and the small squares of 25.5–27.5 in (65–70 cm) do all three: folded into a band for the hair, knotted at the neck, tied around a handle. The skinny scarf does the same without any folding. Silk hair scarves.
Is there a silk scarf with a famous painting on it?
Yes: one bandana reproduces Monet's Impression, Sunrise in teal and orange. Several squares carry painted scenes of their own as well, such as a riverside village, autumn birches beside a river, and misty hills with garden flowers. Browse the bandanas.
Which silk scarves are big enough for the shoulders?
Only the two biggest sizes: 43.5 in (110 cm) squares and 51 in (130 cm) shawls. Laid across the back as a triangle, they cover both shoulders, with the ends crossed or knotted in front. Smaller squares stay at the neck and on the head. Large squares and shawls.
Why does one scarf show up on two color pages?
Each scarf is filed under its main colors, not just the first one. The star print bandana in black and white sits on both the black and the white pages, so you find it whichever color you start from. White silk scarves.
