A Cream Lantern Print Silk Square Scarf Full of Animals

Paper lanterns of every shape hang on thin strings against a cream ground: pleated cylinders, round globes, pointed and checkered ones. Many carry an animal: a blue-striped zebra head, a giraffe, a monkey, two red-cheeked birds, bright tropical fish and a pair of long-beaked blue birds. Others are patterned with fans, starbursts and checks in cobalt, orange, yellow, green and red. A bright orange band runs all around, and on the folded corner the lanterns show faintly on the reverse.

Silk Square Scarf: Neckline, Belt, Head

As a band knotted at the front of the neck, it leaves two tails edged in orange. Around a shirtdress, the same band ties into a belt with the knot centered. The square measures 35.5 × 35.5 in (90 × 90 cm) and is made of silk. Wash it gently by hand in cold water and a mild silk detergent, press the water out between towels and let it dry flat somewhere shaded; iron on low from the back if needed. Also in red and blue. Care instructions

Silk is a protein fiber. Treat it the way you treat hair.

  1. Hand wash, coldTwo minutes in cold water with a detergent made for silk or wool.
  2. Never a biological detergentIts enzymes break down protein, and silk is protein. No bleach either.
  3. Press, then dry flatRoll it in a towel to take the water out. Never wring it.
  4. Out of the sunDirect light fades dye. Dry it flat in the shade, not on a radiator.
  5. Iron damp, on the reverseLowest setting, no steam, and keep the iron off the hem.
  6. Store it loosely rolledRolled loosely in a drawer, away from light. A tight fold leaves a crease.

Dry cleaning works too: ask for silk, no solvent on the hem.
