Bees and Anemones on a Burnt Orange Floral Silk Bandana

The ground is a deep burnt orange, close to rust, and the flowers are kept in cool tones against it. Big white anemones with black centers open in two corners, gray star-shaped lilies and charcoal leaves fan out between them, and sprays of tiny white flowers drift across the square. Look closer and you find bumblebees in flight and cream moths speckled with black. A darker orange border with a lighter inner band runs along the edge.

At the neck, fold it into a triangle and knot it at one side so an anemone shows at the front. For the hair, a narrow fold of it ties above the ear with short tips, a low bun sitting behind. Silk is a protein fiber. Treat it the way you treat hair.

  1. Hand wash, coldTwo minutes in cold water with a detergent made for silk or wool.
  2. Never a biological detergentIts enzymes break down protein, and silk is protein. No bleach either.
  3. Press, then dry flatRoll it in a towel to take the water out. Never wring it.
  4. Out of the sunDirect light fades dye. Dry it flat in the shade, not on a radiator.
  5. Iron damp, on the reverseLowest setting, no steam, and keep the iron off the hem.
  6. Store it loosely rolledRolled loosely in a drawer, away from light. A tight fold leaves a crease.

Dry cleaning works too: ask for silk, no solvent on the hem.
