A Cream Horse Print Silk Square Scarf, Row After Row

Small horses walk in neat rows on a cream ground, printed in red, navy stripes, mustard and tan, some trimmed in blue. A few are plain brown or gray. They are drawn with fine outlines and little shading, like a page of sketches. The border is a camel band with a finer rust line inside it, and a turned-back corner reveals the horses faintly on the reverse.

Knots for a Silk Head Scarf, a Neckerchief or a Bag

For the head, open it into a triangle over the hair and knot the ends at the nape; the camel border frames the face. At the neck, turn it into a band, knotted in front, so the two ends hang down with their stripes. A quick knot around a bag handle works too. Measuring 25.5 × 25.5 in (65 × 65 cm), it folds down small enough for a coat pocket. The red may bleed, so keep it apart from pale things and give it a hand wash in cold water using a gentle silk wash; rinse, blot and let it dry lying open in the shade. Care instructions

Silk is a protein fiber. Treat it the way you treat hair.

  1. Hand wash, coldTwo minutes in cold water with a detergent made for silk or wool.
  2. Never a biological detergentIts enzymes break down protein, and silk is protein. No bleach either.
  3. Press, then dry flatRoll it in a towel to take the water out. Never wring it.
  4. Out of the sunDirect light fades dye. Dry it flat in the shade, not on a radiator.
  5. Iron damp, on the reverseLowest setting, no steam, and keep the iron off the hem.
  6. Store it loosely rolledRolled loosely in a drawer, away from light. A tight fold leaves a crease.

Dry cleaning works too: ask for silk, no solvent on the hem.
