Palms and a Pavilion: The Gray and Mustard Tropical Silk Square Scarf

Dense tropical plants fill the square: palm fronds, broad ribbed leaves, spiky grasses and large round blooms, all drawn in fine lines. Half of them are dove gray with a lavender cast, the other half mustard and ochre, so the two tones weave through each other on a cream ground. At the center, half hidden by leaves, stands a small pavilion with lattice walls. A plain cream border frames it, and the corner fold shows a paler reverse.

The fine drawing reads well when the scarf is knotted close to the neck, the gray and mustard leaves spilling over the two tails. Worn over the hair and tied low at the nape, it becomes a soft head covering with a cream edge around the face. It also knots neatly onto a bag strap. Care instructions

Silk is a protein fiber. Treat it the way you treat hair.

  1. Hand wash, coldTwo minutes in cold water with a detergent made for silk or wool.
  2. Never a biological detergentIts enzymes break down protein, and silk is protein. No bleach either.
  3. Press, then dry flatRoll it in a towel to take the water out. Never wring it.
  4. Out of the sunDirect light fades dye. Dry it flat in the shade, not on a radiator.
  5. Iron damp, on the reverseLowest setting, no steam, and keep the iron off the hem.
  6. Store it loosely rolledRolled loosely in a drawer, away from light. A tight fold leaves a crease.

Dry cleaning works too: ask for silk, no solvent on the hem.
