White silk scarves

Every card gives the size in inches, with centimeters alongside. When a print comes in more than one color, the small squares next to the price switch between them.

Silk Scarfs

Cream, ivory and white grounds

Light grounds carrying horses, lanterns, blossoms and a riverside village, from the 21 in (53 cm) bandana to the 51 in (130 cm) shawl.

The white silk scarf, from crisp white to cream

A white silk scarf here means one of three shades: a crisp white, a soft ivory or a warm cream, the ground you will meet most often. Each one changes how the print looks, and how it sits next to your clothes.

Three shades of light

White is at its crispest on Stitch Garden, a shawl of patchwork daisies in teal and butter yellow with a periwinkle edge. Ivory is a shade softer: Petal Wash, an ivory silk scarf in bandana size, holds a single watercolor flower in lilac and ochre inside a framed edge. Cream is warmer again, close to butter, and runs from the solid cream bandana to the painted riverside village of River Village. Stitch Garden and the other shawls are with the large silk scarves and shawls.

Prints on a cream ground

A cream silk scarf softens the contrast, so the drawing reads gently. Horse Parade lines up small horses in rows inside a camel border; Rearing Bloom draws a floral horse in red, framed in black; Quiet Branch scatters leafy sprigs and birds inside a gray border. Lantern Menagerie hangs paper lanterns and animals in cobalt and orange, and Scribble Hearts doodles cats around a red heart. For the opposite, dark grounds, see the black silk scarves.

The accents inside the prints

Most light scarves carry one strong second color, and that is the one to match. Navy frames the cream Spring Bouquet shawl and joins the red of Scribble Hearts, while Lacework reverses the pair, a navy paisley with an ivory lace-like border. Red runs through Rearing Bloom and Horse Parade, cobalt through Lantern Menagerie and the blue Jelly Drift shawl, teal through Chevron Wave. Blue and navy silk scarves.

Sizes on a light ground

Light grounds cover every size from bandana to shawl: 21 in (53 cm) bandanas, small squares of 25.5 to 27.5 in (65 to 70 cm), 35.5 in (90 cm) squares such as Lantern Menagerie, the 43.5 in (110 cm) River Village and 51 in (130 cm) shawls such as Spring Bouquet. On the skinny scarves, 2 in (5 cm) wide, white comes as a second color, next to peach on Moon Parade or light blue on Terrier Jungle. The sizes compared.

Questions about choosing a white silk scarf

Ivory or cream: which is lighter?

Ivory. It is the palest of the off-whites, with a faint yellow cast, while cream is a little deeper and warmer, closer to butter. Next to bright white fabric both look tinted; against skin or a dark coat, both read as white.

Is there a plain white scarf with no print?

The plain one here is cream rather than bright white: the solid cream bandana, 21 in (53 cm). It knots at the neck, ties in the hair or folds into a headband, and goes with almost anything in warm tones.

What should I wear with a cream scarf?

Warm, quiet colors: camel, tan, chocolate brown, olive, navy. A cream square knotted at the neck of a navy sweater or a camel coat lightens the outfit without the sharp contrast that bright white would bring.

Will a cream scarf show against a white shirt?

A plain one will barely show. Choose a print with a colored border to draw the edge: the black border of Rearing Bloom, the gray border of Quiet Branch or the camel border of Horse Parade. On a dark top, any light ground stands out.

Which white scarf works as a beach cover-up?

One of the 51 in (130 cm) shawls: Stitch Garden, with its white ground and patchwork daisies, or the cream Spring Bouquet. Fold it into a triangle, wrap it around the hips and knot it at one side, the point falling over the leg.
