Choosing a silk head scarf by how much it covers
A silk head scarf can cover a little or a lot, and its size decides which. Every head scarf for women in this collection is a square, from the 21 in (53 cm) bandana to the 43.5 in (110 cm) large square.
The kerchief, knotted at the nape
The bandana, 20.5 to 21 in (52 to 53 cm), is the classic silk kerchief. Fold it into a triangle, lay it over the hair with the point at the back and knot the two ends at the nape, under the point. It covers the top of the head and leaves the hair loose below. The small squares, 25.5 to 27.5 in (65 to 70 cm), sit the same way with longer ends, enough to knot under the chin instead. The full range of kerchief sizes is in our silk bandanas.
Wrapping the whole head
From 35.5 in (90 cm), a square is long enough for a silk head wrap that holds all the hair. Fold it into a triangle and center the long edge on your forehead. Cross the ends at the nape over the point, bring them back to the front and knot them there, then tuck the point in at the back. Head wraps, step by step. The squares that do it are in our silk square scarves.

Head and shoulders with a large square
The 43.5 in (110 cm) squares reach further than the head. Laid over the hair as a triangle, with the ends crossed under the chin and thrown back over the shoulders, one silk headscarf covers head, neck and shoulders together. The prints at this size include a painted riverside village on cream, misty hills and garden flowers on pale blue, and horses with plumes in striped panels on sage. For more of these, see the large silk scarves and shawls.
What shows once it is folded
On the head, a square folded into a triangle shows the middle of its design along the forehead and its borders at the back. Small repeats stay readable from every side: the clustered polka dots, the paisley of the Merlot and Lacework bandanas, the zigzag bands of the chevron square. To dress the hair rather than cover it, with a ribbon or a band, see the hair collection. Scarves for the hair.
Questions about wearing a silk head scarf
What is the smallest square that covers the whole head?
The 35.5 in (90 cm) square. Folded into a triangle, it goes all the way around the head and still leaves ends long enough to knot at the front. A bandana or a small square covers the crown and the back, but not all of the hair.
How is a kerchief different from a head wrap?
A kerchief sits on top of the hair and knots at the nape, so the hair hangs loose underneath. A head wrap goes all the way around, holds the hair inside and knots at the front. The first needs only a bandana, the second a square of 35.5 in (90 cm) or more.
Can I tie a square under the chin?
Yes, with a square of 25.5 to 27.5 in (65 to 70 cm) or larger. Fold it into a triangle, lay it over the hair and knot the ends under the chin, or cross them under the chin and tie them at the nape. On a 21 in (53 cm) bandana the ends are short for this knot.
What should I tie on my head with a printed dress?
A plain scarf, or one that repeats a single color of the dress. The solid bandanas come in periwinkle, cream, black, lilac and cherry red, and knot into a simple kerchief that leaves the print of the dress to do the talking.
How do I wear a head scarf with long hair?
Two ways. Leave the hair loose and tie a bandana as a kerchief on top, knotted at the nape under the hair or over it. Or twist the hair into a bun first and wrap a 35.5 in (90 cm) square around the whole head, bun included.
