The silk square scarf, size by size
A silk square scarf folds into a band, a triangle or a wrap, which is why most of our prints come as squares. What changes from one size to the next is how much of you it can cover. It sits within our silk scarves for women, next to the skinny scarves.
Bandana and small squares
The bandana, 20.5–21 in (52–53 cm), is the smallest square silk scarf in the shop. Folded into a band it becomes a headband; folded into a triangle it ties as a kerchief at the nape or sits at the neck, point in front.
The small squares, 25.5–27.5 in (65–70 cm), give a fuller neck knot and enough length to go around the head or a bag handle. When you want a small silk scarf that still ties a generous knot, start here. The small squares are also at the heart of our silk neck scarves.
The 35.5 in (90 cm) square
At 35.5 in (90 cm), the square is long enough to wrap the whole head and tie at the back, or to roll into a band that threads through belt loops. It is the size most people mean when they look for a 35 inch silk scarf. Here it comes in lantern prints with animals, in cream, red and petrol blue, and in a horse print with checks and stripes. Large square and shawl
The large square and the shawl, 43.5 in (110 cm) and 51 in (130 cm), are the same shape scaled for the shoulders. Folded once into a triangle, they cover the back and knot in front; opened out, the shawl goes over head and shoulders or ties at the hip as a sarong. Large silk scarves and shawls.
One print, three sizes
One horse print, with checks and stripes in orange, cream and light blue, is offered as a square in 21.5, 27.5 and 35.5 in (55, 70 and 90 cm). Keeping the print the same makes it easy to see what each step up changes: a knot at the nape, then a fuller neck knot, then a full head wrap. The size guide.
Questions about the silk square scarf
How big is a small silk square?
Our small squares measure 25.5 to 27.5 in (65 to 70 cm) a side, between the bandana and the 35.5 in (90 cm) square. That gives a neck knot with short ends, a head tie at the nape or a bow on a bag handle. Knots for a small square.
What can I do with a 35.5 in (90 cm) silk square?
It is the first size that wraps the whole head, crossing at the back and tying at the nape or on top. At the neck it leaves long ends you can let hang or knot a second time. Twelve ways to wear a scarf.
Is a bandana a square scarf too?
Yes. Our bandanas are silk squares of 20.5–21 in (52–53 cm), the smallest step on this page. The word describes how the square is worn, folded into a triangle or a band, rather than a separate shape. Silk bandanas.
Can a silk square be worn as a belt?
The 35.5 in (90 cm) square is the comfortable size: folded on the diagonal into a narrow band, it threads through belt loops and knots at the hip with ends to spare. A 27.5 in (70 cm) square can tie around a slim waist too, with shorter ends.
Which silk square scarves have a printed border?
Many of them. Borders here include a scroll border around lily of the valley, a camel border around rows of small horses, a violet border around painted irises and a sunburst border around stars. Folded into a triangle, the border runs along both edges of the point.
