A Black and Dark Teal Baroque Silk Bandana, Mostly Shadow

Black is the first thing you see. The scrollwork is printed in a deep, muted teal that sits close to the ground color, so from a distance the square reads almost solid black, and the leafy curls, pointed crests and fine lines of dots come forward just where light falls on the silk. A few motifs and the narrow border catch a brighter teal. Turn over a corner and the reverse shows the ornament again in a misty gray-green.

Black Silk Bandana Scarf Knots: Kerchief, Headband, Side Tie

Spread over the head, the square covers the crown and its corners knot at the nape, over the gathered hair. Folded into a narrow strip, it makes a headband knotted above the ear: over dark hair the black ground nearly disappears and a few teal curls show through. Silk is a protein fiber. Treat it the way you treat hair.

  1. Hand wash, coldTwo minutes in cold water with a detergent made for silk or wool.
  2. Never a biological detergentIts enzymes break down protein, and silk is protein. No bleach either.
  3. Press, then dry flatRoll it in a towel to take the water out. Never wring it.
  4. Out of the sunDirect light fades dye. Dry it flat in the shade, not on a radiator.
  5. Iron damp, on the reverseLowest setting, no steam, and keep the iron off the hem.
  6. Store it loosely rolledRolled loosely in a drawer, away from light. A tight fold leaves a crease.

Dry cleaning works too: ask for silk, no solvent on the hem.
